New legislation introduced by U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown along with a bipartisan group of lawmakers would expose foreign countries that are buying Ohio farmland. The AFIDA Improvements Act of 2024 would strengthen reporting and enforcement of foreign ownership of agricultural land in the US. The bill would update current law and close loopholes that allow foreign entities toconceal their identity. According to Brown “Foreign adversaries, especially China, have bought up prime farmland across this country for decades, but we don’thave a good handle on how much and where because of lax, outdated disclosure laws. It’s a problem for family farmers and rural communities, and it’s a threat to our national security.”
